Collaborative Projects Between Communities, Academia and Schools

Ana Margarida Esteves, Piedad Vetri, Angela Fontes Carillo and Anahí Ruth Fleck will present aspects of research and education, followed by a general discussion chaired by Iris Kunze. We will see how communities have been influencing society nowadays, by integrating greenroots and traditional knowledge into formal education and academia. We will also see how intentional community networks can foster collaborations among researchers, practitioners and the wider society in different contexts of the world, supported by digital technology and online education.

Presenters and short description of presentations

Ana Margarida Esteves

Integrated researcher at ISCTE University Institute of Lisbon. With over two decades of experience working with ecovillages and community-led initiatives, she is actively involved in GEN-Europe and in international research and education projects focused on sustainability, social innovation, and transformative learning. Her work bridges academic research with practice-based experimentation in communities.

Ana will disclose results of the assessment of the two rounds of the test drive of the MOOC Ecoprise certification, and also share about the most recently launched CHOICE project on ecovillages and co-housing as providers of solutions to the housing crisis. Both initiatives are supported by GEN-Europe and other consortium partners.

Piedad Viteri

Educator and researcher long-time affiliated with the CASA Latina network. Her work focuses on community-based education, sustainability, and learning processes within ecovillages and other forms of intentional and regenerative communities in Latin America. She has extensive experience in designing and facilitating educational initiatives that connect community practice, social transformation, and environmental responsibility.

Piedad will share about the first round of Bioschools in 2025, developed in collaboration with Colegio Johannes Kepler and supported by Gaia Education. The presentation will reflect on the integration of ecovillage-inspired education into formal schooling, highlighting engagement, potentials, challenges, and lessons learned, as well as updates from the ongoing second round in 2026.

Angela Fontes Carillo

Facilitator and researcher with a PhD in Sustainable Development from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. Her work focuses on integrative community development and collective, family, and individual therapeutic processes with Indigenous peoples and community-based groups across Latin America. She is the author of the Integrative Community Development Model and has extensive experience in training facilitators and supporting institutional-community collaboration processes at national and international levels.

Angela and Anahí will jointly present their work on transnational community-university collaboration in regenerative ecotourism. The webinar will share preliminary results from the 2025 Regenerative Bioeconomy Internship and the survey “From Eco-Anxiety to Eco-Healing”. The initiative is supported by the CASA Latina Education and Research Circle.

Anahí Ruth Fleck

Environmental manager and researcher based in Misiones, Argentina, currently serving as Director of Watersheds and Environmental Restoration. She holds degrees in Genetics, Environmental Management, and Neuropsychology, teaches at the Universidad Nacional de Misiones, and is the author of Esencias vibracionales de especies vegetales leñosas (2024).
