Pre-Conference Tour

On Tuesday, July 12, the pre-conference tour took us to four communitites: Grobund, Friland, Andelssamfundet I Hjortsjhoj, and Hertha.

Hertha is a living community situated in a small village called Herskind with app. 110 persons – families and singles – who integrate themselves into the lives and rhythm of the 26 handicapped.

It is reverse integration where normal people integrate into the lives of handicapped. The living community “open institution” consists of 3 houses with 26 residents with special needs.

The residents have different psychological and mental restrictions and some of them are also physically impaired, but all of them are able to walk.

Grobund is a community in formation that aspires to create a debt-free, waste-free and self-sufficient village with mixed housing and business.

Friland is an ecovillage where people experiment with new ways of arranging everyday life, emphasizing sustainability, debt-freedom and self-employment. It was founded in 2002 and now has 45 households with 75 adults and 35 children.

The Hjortshøj ecovillage, on the coast northeast of Aarhus, has been experimenting with new ways of life since 1986 and remains a living laboratory for a sustainable way of life, and therefore a source of inspiration for society as a whole.
